11/5 - 11/19/2023
The past two weeks I worked mostly on tilesets, creating everything the castle might need!
Time Breakdown | | Total: | 13h |
---|---|---|---|
Castle Outdoor Tiles | 5.5h | Other (Hero Checkpoint and Interior Floor) | 1h |
Castle Outdoor Extra Tiles (week 2) | 1.5h | Studio All Hands + Art Mentorship Meetings | 5h |
Castle Outdoor Tileset
Castle Extra Additions and Hero Respawn Point
In the first week (week 7), I created a tileset for the outdoor part of the castle (which will be most of the level). This tileset
When creating the castle, one thing I had to keep in mind was taking my image of a castle, and mapping that to a tileset in such a way that feels natural, while also keeping down the number of tiles I needed to make. Thankfully, a medieval castle's stone brick walls and tiled floors lended themselves very well to tiling. My largest hurdle in terms of scope was definitely the decision of whether or not to include the tower. My mental image of a castle that is imposing and exciting to infiltrate includes, tall, cylindrical towers. In the end, I decided to take the brick wall, brick floor and battlement textures I had created and warp them as best I could into a cylinder shape. While we won't be able to make towers that the player can interact with meaningfully, they will look cool, and that's what matters in the end 😎.
In the second week, I spent much of my time creating some additional tiles for the castle. With grander doors, bared windows, and stairs (which I somehow forgot to include in the first tileset), I think these final additions bring the last touch of detail the castle needs to (hopefully) break up the repetition that tiles can bring. I also created a sprite for the Hero's respawn point/checkpoint, which will be objects the player will need to destroy to push the Hero out of an area.
I'm not sure yet what I will be working on next week, but I will communicate with my producer and leads to get done what needs getting done!
